Medical treatment in osteoarthritis - The goals of osteoarthritis therapy are to decrease pain, maintain or improve joint function and educate the patients and their families about the disease and its therapy. Pharmacologic treatment include analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, topical analgesics, intra-articular injection and anti-depressant. Non-pharmacologic treatment include education, assisstive devices, physical therapy and exercise. On the other hand long-term symptom relief and chondroprotection are currently the focus of therapeutic research.
