Functional anatomy of the lumbar vertebral column The lumbar vertebral column are united by series of intervertebral articulations to form a firm but flexible shaft that supports the trunk while providing a proctective covering for the spinal cord. The lumbar vertebral column consist of 5 lumbar vertebrae compose the movable presacral sectiono f the total column; five fused elements form the inlexible sacrum that articulates with the pelvic girdle. The lumbar functional unit is divided into two segments. The anterior portion is a hydraulic weight-bearing, shock-absorbing structure composed of two vertebrae and their interposed disc. The posterior portion contains the articulating facets and functions as a guiding mechanism without weight-bearing facets. Static stance of thelumbar column is a ligamentously supported position requiring miniimal muscular action. The kinetic stance of the lumbar column flexes and extends in a pattern of lumbar-pelvic rhythm. Smooth movement of this region demands good neuromuscular integration, adequate flexibility of tissues, and competence of the participating joints.
