In this report bowel care activities and their impact on activities of daily life in a 41 year old man who had C6 tetraplegia after a vehicle accident and had a colostomy operation because of infection and necrosis of haemorrhoids two years after the injury were evaluated. The patient was a huge man, he was socially active and had a high level spinal lesion. Colostomy simplified his bowel care, prevented fecal incontinence and improved the quality of his life. The time spent on bowel care decreased and independence of bowel care increased. The colostomy was well accepted by the patient. We believe that formation of a colostomy is an effective and well accepted treatment for selected patients with intractable problems of bowel management following spinal cord injury and should be explained to the patients as an alternative treatment option with its advantages and disadvantages.
