Transcranial Doppler (TD) is a noninvasive ultrasonic technique that measures local blood flow velocity and direction in the proximal portions of large intracranial arteries. It is an inexpensive, easy, repeatable or continuous method and can be performed at the bedside. TD is used principally in the evaluation and management of patients with cerebrovascular disease. Its chief limitation is that it can demonstrate cerebral blood flow ve locities only in certain segments of large intracranial vessels, although large-vessel intracranial arterial disease commonly occurs at these locations.
